Neurosequential Model (NMT) Metrics
The Map Forward Project utilizes several Neurosequential Model (NMT) Metrics developed by Dr. Bruce Perry and the Neurosequential Network to better understand a child’s developmental history, current functioning, and readiness for learning, relationships, and healthy development.
Each metric serves a different purpose, but all are designed to help families and professionals better understand a child’s unique developmental needs and guide thoughtful planning and intervention.
At The Map Forward Project, these assessment tools are integrated within The Map Forward Readiness Framework™, helping translate assessment findings into practical recommendations that strengthen the conditions supporting regulation, connection, learning, and meaningful growth.
Comprehensive NMT Metric (“Brain Map”)
Purpose
Provides a comprehensive picture of a child’s developmental history, brain organization, strengths, vulnerabilities, and resilience.
Best Used When
Complex developmental or behavioral concerns
Trauma or adversity history
Multiple service providers
Educational or treatment planning
Includes
Developmental history
Interviews with caregivers and key professionals
Records review
NMT Metric analysis

It helps clinicians and caregivers identify the people, activities, and relationships that can be intentionally coordinated to meet the child’s developmental needs and support healthy brain development.
ER Metric
Purpose
Provides a focused assessment of a child’s current functioning to support more immediate decision-making.
Best Used When
A rapid update is needed
Treatment planning
Placement decisions
Monitoring significant changes
Caregiver Challenge Estimator
Purpose
Helps identify the unique challenges caregivers experience while supporting a child with developmental or regulatory differences, providing information that can guide support for the entire caregiving system.
Mobius Tile and Grout Planner and Scheduling Tool
Purpose
Provides a visual planning tool that helps organize developmental priorities and coordinate interventions across multiple caregivers, professionals, and settings.
Supports the translation of assessment findings into coordinated, practical action steps that strengthen developmental supports throughout a child’s day and over time.
Follow-Up Metrics
Purpose
Measures developmental progress over time and helps determine how interventions and environmental changes are influencing readiness and functioning.
Assessment is not the endpoint – it is the starting point. At The Map Forward Project, NMT Metrics help us understand developmental functioning, while The Map Forward Readiness Framework™ helps translate that understanding into practical recommendations and interventions that strengthen the conditions supporting learning, healing, growth, and meaningful change.
